Independently lead, manage, support and execute the following in assigned state(s) and line(s) of business:

Compliance projects: RADS process, market conduct remediation, regulatory audit, consultation on pending legislation/regulation

Strategic projects: Consultation/support on new/innovative products and processes, prepare white papers/position documents, analysis of existing forms, form composition/changes.

Other: Represent Nationwide via deposition/testimony in legal action, abide by and invoke attorney-client privilege as necessary, effectively communicate verbally and in writing with internal and external customers including across the reporting structures.

Seeking candidates with critical thinking skills, ability to lead through influence, collaboration skills, able to conceptualize effectively, insurance industry business acumen, project management skills and experience.


Summary: Provides consultation on compliance and contract issues relating to assigned product(s), state(s), and/or operational area(s). Manages and controls all activities related to the monitoring and analysis of changes in statutory and regulatory requirements for assigned product(s). Manages all activities related to the development of product documentation, forms creation/filing/maintenance, and the coordination and implementation of new/revised legal contracts and related materials.

Job Reports To: Manager or Director; Direct Reports: As assigned: Compliance Jobs Bands C-F; 3-10 Total number of employees that report directly and indirectly to this job.

NOTE: Incumbents in this job typically function as managers over assigned compliance staff. They may also serve in an individual contributor role or team leader. An addendum may be attached to this description to state specific job requirements and/or responsibilities unique to assigned functional area.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provides multi-level and multi-issue consulting and advisory services to a diverse mix of internal and external customers, such as administration, sales, marketing, actuarial, systems, claims, attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, and government and regulatory agencies.

  2. Reviews, analyzes and interprets statutes and regulations impacting the products and procedures of assigned operations area/products, and communicates and advises management concerning the compliance and legal implementation.

  3. Responds and oversees the response to state insurance departments or other regulatory agency inquiries on compliance and contract matters.

  4. Prepares and gives presentations to management and staff on compliance issues.

  5. Manages the development and revision of forms, contracts and related documents. Coordinates as needed with underwriting, sales, claims, policy issue administration, systems and other affected areas.

  6. Attends and participates in professional and/or industry association meetings, seminars and continuing education programs.

  7. Reviews advertising and promotional materials and ensure compliance with applicable state statues and other requirements.

  8. Coordinates compliance issues with the Office of General Counsel.

  9. Prepares regular and special reports for management regarding personal and management production and operational status.

  10. Monitors industry publications and insurance and regulatory agency correspondence for law, regulations and changes in laws which affect assigned products.

  11. Maintains effective working relationships with insurance and regulatory agency authorities, trade associations, other insurance/financial companies and other offices within the company.

  12. Manages the hiring, supervising, training and promoting of job candidates regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age or disability in support of Nationwide's Affirmative Action Program.

  13. Manages resources to accomplish assignments, including budgeting, planning (human resources and project); provide direction, delegates and administers human resources policies.

  14. Maintains quality customer relations with emphasis on service, delivery of quality work product, and support of business needs and requirements.

  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in business administration, accounting, finance, insurance or other relevant academic disciplines.

License/Certification/Designation: Completion of specialized course work in securities, finance or insurance regulations. Active pursuit of related industry designations (e.g. CLU, CEBS, FLMI, ChFC, CPCU, IIA) is preferred as are graduate level studies; JD or LLB degree extremely desirable. Special licensing, such as NASD or Notary, may be required for some products.

Experience: Eight years industry experience in a financial service, underwriting, claims and/or administration, regulatory, public or private law firm or actuarial consulting environment; management experience preferred. Four years of experience required if hold law degree.

Knowledge: Federal and state statutes, regulations and case law pertaining to financial/insurance products; legal terminology; forms and contract design; insurance industry practices, procedures, terminology and administration.Product specific regulatory requirements. Personnel policies and procedures. General business, finance, actuarial and accounting principles.

Skills/Competencies:Organizational skills in planning, coordinating, monitoring, training and evaluating work of others in a team or traditional management environment.Decision making and problem-solving skills in dealing with and resolving complex compliance issues having substantial financial consequences. Ability to effectively communicate and interact with management level personnel, regulatory agencies, and other employees; ability to draft , create and revise product documents such as contracts, forms, policies, riders, sales literature, etc.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Standard office environment. Non-standard work hours may be required. Travel may be required on a limited basis.
